Bargain buy James Coppinger ran Huddersfield ragged in a match Doncaster should have won far more comfortably.

Rovers dominated a one-sided Yorkshire derby clash with Coppinger, a £40,000 summer signing from Conference club Exeter, a revelation on the right wing.

Coppinger tormented his marker Rob Edwards and led the Town defence a merry dance as he produced an endless supply of menacing crosses.

But the home side failed to cash in on his sparkling wing play and had to endure an anxious closing spell when Town grabbed a goal out of the blue in the 83rd minute.

It was scrappy at the start but once Doncaster clicked in to top gear they pushed Huddersfield deep into defence with Paul Green and John Doolan running the show in midfield.

Doncaster should have taken the lead in the 27th minute when Michael McIndoe set up a chance for Gregg Blundell but his goalbound shot struck team-mate Leo Fortune-West and was deflected over the top.

Fortune-West made amends when he fired Rovers in front a minute later with a left-foot shot, following more trickery from Coppinger on the right.

Visiting keeper Ian Gray got his hand to the ball but was only able to take the sting out of the shot and it trickled over the line.

Green made it 2-0 in the 55th minute when he hammered home the rebound after his initial shot had been blocked following good work by McIndoe and Blundell.

Rovers should have had more goals to show for their display but had to endure a tense finish when Jon Worthington dribbled through the middle to score with a swerving shot seven minutes from time.

Huddersfield had hardly posed a threat until then but they piled on the pressure in the closing stages and it needed a great block tackle from substitute Mark Albrighton to prevent Chris Brandon from pinching a last-minute equaliser.
