Lee Bullock's first-half bullet was enough to give York City the points and secure their 100 per cent record.

The battling Minstermen completed a stylish smash and grab raid at the McAlpine Stadium deservedly beating a disappointing Huddersfield side.

In a breathless opening ten minutes the ball cannoned from box to box with neither side able to control the game.

City's striker and assistant manager Lee Nogan went closest for the visitors when he collected a cleverly lobbed pass from Stuart Wise but he could only drag his shot across Ian Gray's goal.

As the game settled it was York that looked much the stronger of the sides and their dominance paid off when midfielder Bullock fired home from the edge of the area.

The Huddersfield defence, who looked suspect throughout the whole 90 minutes, failed to clear from a throw in and the ball squirmed through to Bullock who unleashed a rasping drive which struck the underside of the bar before nestling in the back of the net.

The Terriers tried to get back into the game but were unable to unlock a solid five-man York backline.

Former Huddersfield man and now York captain Darren Edmondson was especially impressive marking the lightening pace of Jon Newby out of the game.

The home side came out after the break hunting for the elusive goal and did come close as they pressed York back.

The best chances fell to Jon Stead who was unlucky not to drag the Terriers back into the game.

Midway through the half Andy Booth, who won most of the lofted long balls, flicked on in the box and Stead acrobatically volleyed. But keeper Mark Ovendale made an equally nimble save to match the young striker.

Stead was once more unlucky just moments later when he met a floated Danny Schofield corner with power but his header was blocked in front of the keeper.

The goal never came and the brief comeback did not last. York weathered the storm and once again took control of the game towards the end as they frustrated the home side.

They came close to doubling their lead when livewire Liam George left Town captain Efe Sodje standing. He crossed to Nogan who stepped over the ball letting in substitute Richard Cooper but he could only fire wide of the upright.

York, who were pre-season favourites for the drop, now go level at the summit of the Nationwide Division Three table and could break a club record for their best ever season opening if they beat Southend United on Tuesday.

After the game York City player-manager Chris Brass, suspended today after being sent off in the opening game, said he expected nothing less from his side's display.

"It doesn't surprise me at all that we can come here and win," he said. "I know what we can do and I am delighted with the way the lads played without me." Town manager Peter Jackson told the fans that he shared their disappointment and frustration but vowed his team could and would get better.
