Huddersfield Town's beleaguered players turned in an fine performance to drag themselves off the bottom of Division Two in front of their most famous fan - Star Trek star Patrick Stewart.

Mirfield-born Stewart was at the McAlpine Stadium to lend his support to the Terriers just a week after they went into Administration with debts estimated at £18 million and he watched his beloved side rack up their biggest win of the season in a commanding performance.

Town, whose players have not been paid since September and are owed £300,000 in wages, bagged two goals in six first-half minutes and could even afford the luxury of missing a penalty just before the break as they routed a Chesterfield team who were not at the races all afternoon.

Leading marksman Martin Smith began the rout on 17 minutes when he latched on to an Andy Booth flick on to strike a low shot underneath keeper Andy Richmond.

And six minutes later a brilliant Danny Schofield pass played with the outside of his right boot put John Stead in the clear and the striker drew Richmond off his line before cheekily chipping the ball over him to register his first goal since November.

On 44 minutes Chesterfield defender Steve Blatherwick impeded Stead as they challenged for a John Worthington cross inside the area and Stockton-on-Tees referee Geoff Winter immediately awarded a penalty.

Ex-Sunderland and Sheffield United striker Smith stepped up to take the spot kick and even though he sent Richmond the wrong way he blasted the effort high and wide of the target.

But Smith made amends on 53 minutes when he curled in a wickedly curling free kick into the bottom left hand corner from 20 yards after Blatherwick was booked for another foul on Stead to notch his 16th goal of the season.

And the impressive Stead completed the win on 66 minutes by finishing off a classic route one move. Keeper Phil Senior's long punt downfield was flicked on by Chris Holland and Stead out-paced two defenders to steer a low drive past Richmond and just inside the left hand upright.
