Andy Booth scored a superb opener for Huddersfield but it was not enough as Chris Greenacre's double either side of half-time earned Tranmere a point in a 2-2 draw at the Galpharm Stadium.

Striker Booth produced the sweetest of strikes in the ninth minute to lift confidence but Tranmere, smarting from a 3-2 home defeat against Gillingham on Saturday, refused to buckle.

Booth's 18-yarder was a goal to remember but Greenacre turned it around early in the second half.

Danny Schofield, the only Town player to have scored in the previous five games, equalised from the penalty spot after Chris Brandon was felled by Shane Sherriff.

Huddersfield, without a home win in seven matches, had enough chances to have won the game in the last half hour.

Sub Mark Hudson, who was dropped after coming under fire from the fans, had two superb chances to level in stoppage time but again his finishing let him down when he could have become a hero.

Booth's wonder strike gave Huddersfield the perfect start in the ninth minute. The ball fell for Booth after a one-two between Danny Adams and Schofield and he lashed home from 18 yards with his shot going in off the underside of the bar.

In that opening period Huddersfield stroked the ball around and did not look short on confidence despite a bad run. The goal should have sparked a revival but Tranmere hit back and Greenacre forced Matt Glennon into a fine save.

Glennon was needed again shortly afterwards when he beat away John Mullin's effort and then Steven Davies fired just wide of the far post with Glennon rooted.

Mullin had the best chance to level in the 21st minute when Davies crossed from the left. He was a fraction ahead of Glennon but lifted the ball over the bar.

Town centre-back Martin McIntosh had a couple of headers from set-pieces but Rovers were winning the midfield battle.

Glennon saved from Chris Shuker and a Davies free-kick deflected off the wall and over before Greenacre levelled six minutes before the break. Shuker's corner skimmed off the back of Booth's head in a near post crowd and Greenacre stooped to head home from close range.

Greenacre's second came after 51 minutes when Shuker's free-kick fell loose in the box and the striker fired home his 12th goal of the season.

Brandon, who turned in a man of the match display with his trickery out wide, was Town's best bet and he gave Sherriff a hard time down the right.

The equaliser came when Brandon escaped Sherriff and was tripped in the box. Schofield stepped up to scored from the spot with an hour gone.

Brandon then robbed Sherriff and set up Gary Taylor-Fletcher who prodded wide. Booth headed straight at sub keeper John Achterberg before Hudson twice spurned great opportunities.

With 90 minutes up he blasted at Achterberg when he had the whole goal to aim at and then with seconds of the four minutes of stoppage time remaining he fired over the bar with Achterberg on the ground after he dropped a cross.
