The 28-year-old took a knock to his left knee during the 2-1 win against Peterborough United in late August and was sent to see two specialists last week.
Both doctors confirmed that an operation to trim the cartilage in the knee was necessary.
The former Oldham Athletic man will now sit out the trip to Port Vale and the home game against Barnsley, and is also a doubt for the clash with Bristol City on September 25.
