Darlington were placed into administration just before Christmas and the word circulating around the impressive Reynolds Arena before the game was whether or not Darlington would be hosting football come the end of the season.

After this defeat the end of the season cannot come quickly enough for the Darlington supporters, who witnessed another goalless 90 minutes from their favourite and a smash and grab raid from the visitors.

Huddersfield had failed to win on their travels since October and so struggling Darlington probably felt that their luck may change against The Terriers.

The home side began the game brightly and Town keeper Phil Senior did well to deny Ashley Nicholls in the sixth minute as the Huddersfield man pushed the ball away for the game's first corner.

From the corner kick on-loan striker Lee Matthews fired wide from the edge of the area.

The visitors were on the back foot and the home side continued to push forward in search of the opening goal. But in recent games Darlington had created plenty of chances without being able to find the back of the net.

And this trend continued as Jonathan Hutchinson, Ian Clark and Craig Liddle all went close in the opening 25 minutes of the game.

But the sucker punch in the 28th minute from the visitors gave them all three points.

Darlington goalkeeper Michael Price was at fault as he failed to hold on to a tame looking shot from Stead.

Price could only parry the ball into the path of Andy Booth, who volleyed in from ten yards.

Darlington had it all to do in the second half but anxiety crept in and only an effort from Neil Wainwright, which was turned around the post by Senior, was all that the home side could show in the second 45 minutes.

As the temperature dropped so did the performance of both sides. Booth had two efforts from distance that failed to trouble Price and the game petered out into a non-event.

After the game delighted Town boss Peter Jackson said: "We defended well and I was delighted that we kept our first clean sheet of the season away from home." Dejected Darlington manager David Hodgson said: "We got a bumper crowd and let them down with what was probably our worst performance of the season.

"We had no pattern to our play and although we had chances we let anxiety creep in."
