Tony Carss' wonder goal with just ten minutes remaining fired the Terriers into the top six with a 1-0 win over Torquay.

Torquay United keeper Kevin Dearden, making his first start in eight months, had frustrated the home side with a series of spectacular saves.

But, not even the 290 Gulls' fans who made the long journey north could argue that Huddersfield deserved all three points.

After a scrappy opening, Huddersfield, who have now won their last five games, took control and began a blitz on the Torquay United goal that would continue right up until the final whistle.

Their best chance fell to captain Andy Booth after he pounced on a loose ball midway inside the visitors half. Booth immediately attacked the reeling back four and when Craig Taylor tripped the goalmouth was left gaping.

But Booth's finishing was weak and he scuffed his shot wide.

Torquay's soul shot on goal in the first 45 came from on-loan Brian McGlinchey, who increased his spell at the club by another month in midweek, when he flashed a powerful drive across a crowded Town six-yard box.

After the break, the siege didn't let up but Division Three player of the month for September Jon Stead was uncharacteristically blunt in front of goal.

The 20-year old, who is being trailed by a host of Premiership clubs, could only direct a clear header into Dearden's arms.

For all the home side's pressure Torquay could have taken the lead when David Graham laid off a neat ball into the path of Kevin Hill. But his shot was poor and the ball looped over the bar.

Finally, after it seemed Huddersfield were running out of ideas, Andrew Holdsworth floated a perfectly weighted corner to Carss 30 yards from goal.

The breathtaking volley he unleashed, which rocketed into the top corner, will live long in the memories of the 9,117 supporters who witnessed it.

After the game, Huddersfield manager Peter Jackson said the corner routine was one they had rehearsed on the training ground.

"We have tried it out a lot in training but he hasn't scored one until today. This is our third clean sheet on the trot and we are becoming very hard to beat," he said.

Gull's boss Leroy Rosenior praised his team for their solid defending and claimed they deserved a point.

He said: "We defended superbly but lost to a whirlwind goal that was totally out of the ordinary. Before Huddersfield Town scored, they had run out of ideas and were resorting to long throws into the box."
