Macclesfield's caretaker boss John Askey dropped a bombshell after his side's drubbing of lacklustre Huddersfield.

Askey confirmed that he had rejected the board's offer of a contract until the end of the season saying: "The terms are an insult they obviously don't want me, I understand that they will be interviewing other candidates. I am Macclesfield through and through, but they seem to think that someone else can do a better job.

"It's not important that the players continue to play for me it is important that they continue to play for the club.

His chairman Rob Bickerton countered: "We are surprised at John's reaction but my door is always open, in fact I will be having a beer with him after the game." Askey's players gave the most eloquent answer to the Board's apparent derisory terms with their best performance in two years.

Livewire strike Matthew Tipton opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a bullet drive to the roof of the net. His strike partner John Miles added the second in the 63rd minute as he moved onto a Chris Priest pass to curl a delightful shot inside the far corner.

The game was as good as sealed in the 75th minute when Nathan Clarke was sent-off for muscling down Tipton, the former Oldham man getting up off the floor to thump home the spot kick, his ninth goal in 11 starts.

Chris Priest added the icing on the cake when he converted Tipton's cross in the dying moments.

Dejected Huddersfield boss Peter Jackson offered no excuses: 'It was an embarrassing display, a bad day at the office. The players have let myself and the fans down, there are no excuses. It was totally unacceptable but things can change in 24 hours and we will regroup."
