Gary Johnson, the Yeovil Town boss, hailed this victory as the best yet for the Division Three new boys.

"We have beaten Swansea, Mansfield and Doncaster, but Huddersfield are a big club and this was something special," he said.

It was a red-letter day for the Johnson family. It was Gary's son, Lee, who scored the 51st minute goal that was to prove the winner. He got to the near post to head in a right-wing cross from substitute Paul Terry who had just replaced injured skipper Terry Skiverton.

Lee said: "I'm glad I got that goal because my first-half performance wasn't too good. Several of my passes had gone astray." Yeovil got off to a terrific start with a fourth minute goal. Skipper Skiverton moved up unmarked for a right-wing free-kick from Gavin Williams and powerfully headed past goalkeeper Ian Gray, who was Huddersfield's man of the match.

Both sides were determined to play neat attacking football and it was an engrossing spectacle for the fans. The Terriers went looking for an equaliser and might have got it on 25 minutes when Lee Fowler crossed perfectly for Andy Booth, only for the veteran striker to head over.

There was nothing wrong with Booth's next header on 31 minutes and it took the save of the match from keeper Chris Weale to prevent an equaliser.

Huddersfield's first-half performance deserved some reward and they got it on 41 minutes. A free-kick on the edge of the box was teed up by Fowler and Tony Carss for Jon Stead, who fired through the wall past a static Weale.

Yeovil had the better chances in the second half with Gray saving from Kevin Gall and Kirk Jackson in one-on-one situations, but the visitors almost snatched a point following an 83rd minute corner when Efe Sodje scrambled the ball against a post before it was cleared.
